AIRSOFT
Airsoft is a sport where players engage in simulated combat with Airsoft Guns. Airsoft today takes many forms, yes there are still many who play the sport but there are also many Airsoft enthusiasts that just collect the Airsoft Guns plus even more that only target shoot in their backyard or on private land.
AIRSOFT BASICS USA
People group together into organized teams at a dedicated skirmish field and shoot small projectiles called BBs at each other for sport. Where airsoft differs from paintball games is that airsoft is much more focused on military simulation. Where paintball guns don’t always look like “real” guns, airsoft guns are modeled after genuine firearms and are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. The players will also, for the most part, be more dedicated to dressing in more realistic military gear, including vests and helmets, in order to look more realistic.
WHAT IS AN AIRSOFT GUN?
Are you thinking of starting Airsoft but want to know more about the sport and Airsoft Guns before you buy? Okay, so firstly, let’s take a look at what you need to know before making the right gun choice for you.
The following information is given as a guide, and we hope that the information will help you get into this global sport.

WHAT DO THEY SHOOT?
Airsoft guns are replicas that shoot spherical plastic projectile balls known as BBs. They are typically 6mm and white but can also be a different color. Typically a gun is a replica military gun designed for competitive gameplay such as skirmishing and historical reenactments.
There are countless types on the market, and all have their place, offering endless fun. However, one of the most important things you need to know when buying a gun is ‘why do all guns have an orange flash hider (tip of the barrel)?
This is because the US federal law of 1988 makes buying one without the orange tip illegal. That law does not prevent airsoft owners from removing or painting the tip, but many state and city laws do not allow it.
According to US Code, Title 15, Chapter 76, “it’s unlawful for any person to manufacture, sell, transport or receive any replica or imitation firearm unless it contains a 6mm (0.24in) blaze orange tip”. The law is self-explanatory. It means that you can’t make, buy, or sell toy guns (airsoft included) that don’t have an orange tip. Additionally, carrying toy guns across state lines is illegal if they don’t have the orange tip.

WHAT IS FPS?
FPS is the standard form of measurement for the power of Airsoft Guns. It stands for ‘feet-per-second’ and essentially covers how fast your BB will project once you’ve pulled the trigger. Usually, in the US, outdoor fields limit guns from 450 to 550 FPS. It’s higher than the indoors because players have to shoot their opponents from afar. Most fields also have a higher FPS for bolt-action sniper rifles and can go as high as 700 FPS.
HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE?
The minimum age to buy an airsoft gun is 18. However, you can play on an airsoft site under the age of 18. Different sites will have their own minimum age requirements. However, there is no age restriction with owning or using an airsoft gun or using it in your backyard.
WHAT BB ARE GOOD?
Today there are hundreds of BB manufacturers and brands and different weights to offer the best performance for your kit. Every airsofter will have their favorite brand, which can also change depending on the gun they are using. Magazines can also be difficult with some brands but OK with others.
A good place to start is with Bulldog BB; low cost and very good for most rifles and pistols. Start with the standard 0.20G 6mm BB, and then experiment with different weights and even other brands if you feel you are not getting the best performance from your gun.
WHAT IS A HOP-UP?
A Hop-Up system is installed in most airsoft guns and pistols and is used to increase effective ranges by putting backspin on the pellets. The Magnus effect causes the pellets to experience more lift as they are shot, counteracting against gravity. In addition, a small rubber nub protrudes into the top of the barrel through a small hole, catching the top of the pellet as it moves past.
Adjusting the hop-up makes the nub more or less protrude into the barrel so that backspin is increased or reduced. Ideally, the hop-up should be adjusted so that the pellets fly as far as possible in a straight line without curving upward too far or dropping to the ground too quickly.
Ease and location of adjustment vary by gun design; some equipment provides a control that can be adjusted quickly during gameplay. Others may require partial disassembly. For example, a common location for Hop-Up adjustment is where the ejection port would be on a real firearm. This allows the machine to be covered while allowing quick access to adjust the Hop-Up.

HISTERY OF THE SPORT
Airsoft originated from Japan in the early 1970s, when photographer Ichiro Nagata, an avid shooting enthusiast, thought about making model guns that shoot real projectiles that could not kill. These “guns” were trademarked as soft air guns, tailoring to the needs of shooting enthusiasts while conforming to Firearm and Sword Possession Control Law Japan’s strict gun control.
The name “soft air” referred to the compressed Freon-silicone oil mixture (later replaced by a propane-silicone oil mixture known as “Green Gas”) that was used as a propellant gas, which was significantly weaker than the canister CO2 used in airguns.
Initially designed for target shooting, the plastic balls these “soft air guns” use can be shot at humans without causing injury due to the low muzzle energy. However, after Tokyo Marui introduced its revolutionary electric motor-gear box design, soft air guns became popular for casual wargames, which the Japanese call survival games.
Asahi Firearms was a model company from Japan that operated in the 1980s and 90s and was one of the early pioneers of the hobby.
The guns spread to the United Kingdom in the late 1980s and early 1990s via a company called LS. They were sold in separate pieces and had to be assembled before they were capable of shooting. These then became available to the rest of Europe and North America and rapidly gained popularity worldwide.
Since the mid-1980s, airsoft has been adapted with a purely recreational application in mind, and all ages enjoy the sport. The replicas are now produced globally, with the majority being manufactured in East Asia. Many law enforcement agencies and military units within the United States currently use these guns for force-on-force training drills.
